Exploring the Future of Adventure in Butte, MT: The  Gondola Project

A rendering of what Butte could look like with pedestrians and families walking and going about their day while a gondola system runs overhead.

The picturesque landscapes of Butte, MT, are on the brink of an exciting transformation. The Butte Local Development Corporation (BLDC) and the City-County of Butte-Silver Bow have teamed up with SCJ Studio Landscape Architecture to explore the feasibility of a gondola system. Assisted by Doppelmayr/Garaventa, this ambitious project, supported by Our Lady of the Rockies (OLR), aims to reimagine the area with a wealth of outdoor amenities and attractions.

The gondola will offer stunning views of Montana's rugged beauty, with base areas and terminals thoughtfully designed to accommodate parking, retail spaces, and more. Visitors can look forward to a plethora of activities, from mountain biking and hiking to enjoying an outdoor amphitheater. Imagine biking down specially designed trails, exploring interpretive paths lined with native plants, or watching a live performance from the breathtaking East Ridge with Butte, Montana, as the backdrop in the valley below.

Families will love the adventure playground, where kids can climb and explore to their heart's content. For those seeking thrills, a ropes course is in the works, promising an adrenaline-pumping experience. The top station will be more than just a viewpoint; it will host a restaurant, a wedding center, and various overlooks, providing a perfect setting for special occasions or a leisurely meal with a view.

This project enhances Butte's recreational offerings and envisions a vibrant community hub, complete with a bike shop and diverse amenities that cater to both locals and tourists. As plans develop, anticipation builds for what will undoubtedly become a centerpiece of outdoor adventure and natural beauty in Montana.
